Nurturing children is a job that’s best done with ample and relaxed support. In this regard, the Counseling department of The Indian Academy organized a workshop on ‘Parenting and Behaviour of children’ for the parents of Foundation Stage students on 17 September 2014. The session was conducted by Ms. Anu Mampilli, a licensed Social Worker with years of experience in working with students with various challenges, parents and teachers.

The main parenting tips shared includes:

Discipline: Disciplining kids is very important to their physical and mental health. Set the rules of behavior and be consistent in applying them across situations. When you say “no hitting” the first time your child smacks another child on the play ground, you also need to say “no hitting” the second, third, and fourth time your child does it. Disciplining helps kids to make good choices and manage their emotions appropriately.

Parents as partners: It is extremely important that both the parents stand together and have a united front regarding the discipline rules set and implement them as a team.

Quality time: Children from birth to adulthood need time and attention from their parents. Spending quality time with children would make them feel important and loved and give them a chance to voice their thoughts and feelings. Eventually the parent and child would develop a stronger emotional bond.

Routine: Order and routine help the kids to take charge of their activities and eliminates power struggles. It gives them a sense of security and helps them develop self discipline. Hence children require consistent nap times, mealtimes, and bedtimes as well as times when the child is free to just run around and have fun.
